Build, Repair or Rebuild?

Repair It, Rebuild It or Start New?

Some decks need only a focused repair. Others have enough deterioration that rebuilding makes more sense. New deck projects start with the property, layout and how the homeowner plans to use the space. If you are deciding whether an existing deck can be saved, read Deck Repair vs. Rebuilding: When Can a Deck Be Saved?.

Repair May Make Sense When

  • damage is limited to specific boards or components;
  • the primary structure remains serviceable;
  • localized dry rot can be removed and rebuilt cleanly;
  • the current layout still works for the homeowner.

Rebuilding May Make Sense When

  • deterioration is widespread;
  • multiple structural components need replacement;
  • the existing layout no longer fits the intended use;
  • repairing in pieces would not be practical.

What We Evaluate

Deck Problems Are Often a Combination of Structure, Exposure and Use
